Why London Student Rooms

A room search you can actually trust

Big rental groups are full of agents, duplicates and scams. We keep ours clean so you can focus on finding a home.

Genuine rooms only

Every post is reviewed by a human admin before it goes live, so you only see real rooms from real people.

Moderated daily

Join requests and posts are checked every morning and evening. Suspicious profiles are turned away.

No free agent spam

Agents and businesses must take a paid, clearly labelled package, so the feed stays useful for students.

Free for students

Students and people looking for a room can post and search for free. Always.

Stay safe

Spot a genuine room, avoid the scams

Standard UK renting advice every newcomer should know before sending a penny.

6 signs a room is genuine

  1. 1
You can view itThe room can be viewed in person, or on a live video call if you are still abroad.
  2. 2
The landlord is verifiableTheir name matches the owner or agent, and a licensed agent can be checked on a redress scheme.
  3. 3
The address checks outThe address exists, matches the photos and is a real residential property.
  4. 4
A written tenancy agreementYou get a written agreement to read before you pay anything substantial.
  5. 5
Deposit is protectedYour deposit goes into a government-backed scheme (DPS, MyDeposits or TDS) within 30 days.
  6. 6
Price matches the areaThe rent is in line with similar rooms nearby, not suspiciously cheap.

Top room scams to avoid

  1. 1
Pay before viewingNever send a deposit or "holding fee" for a room you have not seen, in person or live on video.
  2. 2
Too good to be trueA large room in Zone 1 far below market rent is the classic bait.
  3. 3
Untraceable paymentsAvoid cash, gift cards, crypto or money transfer to a stranger. Use traceable bank transfer and get a receipt.
  4. 4
"I'm abroad, I'll post the keys"A landlord who cannot show the room and asks you to pay first is a common scam.
  5. 5
Fake or copied listingsPhotos lifted from other websites. Try a reverse image search.
  6. 6
Pressure to decide now"Lots of people are interested, pay today" is a pressure tactic. Take your time.

Abroad? Ask for a live video viewing where the person walks you through the room and shows the street outside. If anything feels off, walk away, and report it to Action Fraud. Learn more about deposit protection on GOV.UK.

FAQ

Questions, answered

Is it free to join and post?

Yes. Students and people looking for rooms can join and post for free. Paid packages are only for agents, landlords and businesses.

Why was my post declined?

Posts are declined if they look like spam, come from an agent or business without a paid package, or break the group rules. You can repost a genuine room listing.

How do I check if a room is genuine?

Always view it in person or on a live video call, check the landlord and the address, get a written tenancy agreement and never pay before viewing. See the Stay safe section above.

I'm moving from abroad. Can I rent before I arrive?

Yes, but insist on a live video viewing, check the landlord, pay only by traceable methods and make sure your deposit is protected in a government scheme.

How do paid listings work?

Pick a package, pay via PayPal using your company name as the reference, then message the admin via the Facebook group. Listings go live once payment is received.

Do you earn money from links on this site?

Some links are affiliate links, which means we may earn a commission if you sign up, at no extra cost to you. We only feature services that are relevant to students moving to London.
